How much energy?
According to the New York Times, the total amount of energy used by data centers around the world is currently estimated to be 30 billion watts; approximately 1.5% of total (global) energy consumption. 30 billion watts (denoted 30GW) is roughly equivalent to the energy output of 30 nuclear power plants, and data centers in the United States account for a quarter to a third of usage of power.
