Renewable energy opportunities
Data centers are entering the realm of renewable energy as their main source of energy and using diesel fuel generators and back-up resources. This trend in creating energy efficient machinery and environmentally friendly plans has been growing as shown through Apple's energy plan for their largest green energy data center located in Maiden, North Carolina.

Apple's energy plans consist of using solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity and hydro-power. Apple's plans of a greener data center serves as a reigning force in the move to renewable energy within technology, data centers and the cloud.

Apple recently released a map outlining their visions for the new green Maiden data center. As pictured to the left, the data center will be consisted of a large open area for Fuel Cell Installations and Solar Array fields to gather solar power. Many data centers run on energy efficient resources, but depend on diesel fuel generators for more power. Following Apple's plans and ideas of a greener data center will definitely help the lowering of emissions and lower the cloud's carbon footprint in our local and global environment. Creating a successful data center using renewable energy will push data centers towards the future.
As a result of the consideration in renewable energy, carbon footprints in the environment, and the ability to not depend on diesel or fossil fuels, Apple has accumulated 60 percent of their energy from renewable resources. In addition, the renewable resources used to fuel Apple's Maiden data center were not taken from local energy but created through their efforts in creating windmills for wind power, solar panel fields for solar power and fuel cell installation facilities. Apple is not locally affecting the town of Maiden by draining existing power sources the town depends on, but rather has created an independent source of energy; Apple has created a data center that runs independently of outside energy resources and leaves a considerable small carbon footprint for a facility of its use and size, this is a concept and plan more data centers should strive to hold.
